June Means Inspiring Speeches, Like This One - June 13, 2014 by Admin

Perhaps one of the best things about this time of year (besides summer vacation) is all of the words of wisdom that come from individuals who we admire. June is synonymous with graduation ceremonies and where there are graduations, there are inevitably, graduation speeches.

One commencement speech that has gotten attention in the media as of late is Jim Carrey’s address to Marharishi University of Management graduates in Iowa.

In true comedian fashion, Carrey got a number of jokes in, including poking fun at the school’s practice of allowing time for transcendental meditation, or as Carrey put it, time “to slack off twice a day for an hour and a half.”

But what earned him a huge round of applause from the graduates and the admiration of viewers later, was some of the meaningful nuggets like this regarding concern over doing something bigger with your life that you imagine you can.

“Like many of you, I was concerned about going out into the world and doing something bigger than myself, until someone smarter than myself made me realize that there is nothing bigger than myself. My soul is not contained within the limits of my body; my body is contained within the limitlessness of my soul.”

He also talked about how his dad took the safe route becoming an accountant instead of a comedian, but fell on hard times nonetheless.

Carrey said, “I learned many great lessons from my father, not the least of which was that you can fail at what you don’t want, so you might as well take a chance on doing what you love.”

A great reminder, not only for graduates, but for everyone out there to always follow your dreams.

4 Great Reads to Keep You Company this Winter Break - December 5, 2013 by Admin

Breathe easy fellow college students, winter break is on the horizon. Soon, the sleepless nights and cramming for tests will be replaced with sleeping in and holiday parties. Best of all, you’ll get to break away from the professor-prescribed reading lists and pick up a book that you actually want to read.

If you’re looking for a few good page-turners to keep you preoccupied over the upcoming break, here are some good options:

The Hunger Games Trilogy – We’ll forgive you if you haven’t yet had time to read any of the three Hunger Games books by author Suzanne Collins yet (you are busy with this little thing called school). But now that you have a few weeks free, it’s the perfect time to get hooked with the rest of the world. If for no other reason, than the second movie was just released and it’s definitely better to read before watching.

While these books are pegged as young adult fiction, the theme is anything but. The story follows 16 year-old Katniss Everdeen as she sacrifices herself in place of her sister to fight to the death in front of a live television audience. Katniss is pitted against children from the 12 districts of Panem in an antiquated tradition which has them fighting for their survival. It’s a must read.

A Brave New World – This science-fiction classic by Aldous Huxley may have been written in 1931, but is anything but dated. The story is set in the future where technology has solved so many of life’s daily problems that individuals must distract themselves with a drug called soma. Sex is for recreation not reproduction and flying transportation actually exists. This read never gets old and remains thought provoking.

Gone Girl – Before you pick up this book by Gillian Flynn, make sure you don’t have anything pressing to do, because we can almost guarantee that you won’t be able to put it down before you finish. It’s really that addictive. The story follows married couple Nick and Amy Dunne and begins when Amy suddenly goes missing. We won’t spoil any of the twist and turns that follow by saying any more.

The Stupidest Angel – If you want to get into the holiday spirit while also having a good laugh, check out The Stupidest Angel by Christopher Moore. The story follows Archangel Raziel as he sends the residents of Pine Grove, California into Christmas chaos for a year not to be forgotten.

Weddings from the Heart

“Bowled” Over by this Non-Traditional Wedding Reception - March 24, 2011 by Admin

Married on 10.10.10 in an intimate ceremony on the beach, Celeste & Craig had a creative idea. They asked guests to bring a token of love to the ceremony and explain why they selected it. Heartwarming and moving, Craig’s mom brought his baby bracelet, where others read poems or nursery rhymes from childhood.

A very special thanks to Mindi and Rich of Photography by Verdi who shared these uniquely candid and fun photos with us.

Opting out of the traditional wedding reception, Celeste & Craig invited 200 of their closest friends and family to join them for a fun and festive outing at a local bowling alley in Levittown, New York. I thought this was a great option for couples who have lots of people to celebrate with, but still wish to keep it “green.” It not only saves money for a large reception, but produces less waste considering the number of guests. Not to mention, it is super fun!

I love, love this vintage bowling bowl bag they used to collect their cards. Again, thinking outside of the traditional paper sign-in book, they asked guests to write words of encouragement on bowling pins.

Celeste chose a lovely dress that can definitely be worn again. As for the bowling shoes, well, we know those will be worn again!

Guests enjoyed four different kinds of  locally-sourced ethnic foods, and polished off the fun-filled day with a delightfully sweet ending . . .

This Little Piggy Went to a Party - October 4, 2009 by Admin

"The time has come," the Walrus said,
"To talk of many things:
Of shoes–and ships–and sealing-wax–
Of cabbages–and kings–
And why the sea is boiling hot–
And whether pigs have wings."

~Lewis Carroll, The Walrus and the Carpenter
Whether or not the pigs at your next party have wings, you can bet they'll be a high-flying success!

This Birthday Is In The Bags - October 4, 2009 by Admin

Hot Momma Drama: Time for a birthday story…—Hot Celebrity Gossip Served Up Nice and Fresh: ” So many of you know last week was my birthday. It’s really no big deal..I’m not one of those people who announces to everyone I see on that day that , ‘Hey..it’s my birthday.’ In fact, I had lunch on my birthday with my friend Julie..and she had NO idea it was my birthday. Granted she felt like a big dork when she found out 3 days later..but oh well. Anyway..the point is I got some sweet CASH-ola for my b-day. Which is the best present you can get..( I dont’ care what anyone says..it is!) So tonight I decided to go out and spend it.”

This blog just goes to show that a frugal gal can go right off the deep end for her birthday!
