5 Ways to Make Polka Dot Pumpkins - October 22, 2013 by Admin
I love fall.  It is my very favorite season!  As soon as my first neighbor puts a pumpkin on their porch, I am ready to decorate my home for fall too.  I’ve gathered five of my favorite DIY Polka Dot Pumpkin tutorials here for you.  They are all on the EASY scale, not to worry.  Grab the kids, spray paint, glue dots, glitter, tape and drills (for the power tool fans!) to make-your-own polka dot pumpkins this year.  P.S. – I keep my pumpkins around the house ’til Thanksgiving!
#1 – Make your own “Glitter Pumpkin” with Craftaholics Anonymous
  • Paint your pumpkin (or Fun-Kin) with two coats of white paint
  • Stick thin Glue-Dots stickers all-over your pumpkin
  • Sprinkle on glitter (any color) over a box or tray to catch excess glitter
  • See more of her Halloween Mantle tutorials (they are all fantastic!)

#2 - Momtastic’s Polka Dot Painted Pumpkin
Here’s a craft that the kids can help you make.  It would be great as an activity that doubles as their take-home favor too!
  • Wipe down your pumpkin (or Fun-Kin)
  • Find a small circle shape to use as a stencil (like a plastic Easter egg)
  • Trace circles all over your pumpkin with a pen or sharpie
  • Freehand paint inside your circles with any color paint
  • Click to see more Pumpkin Crafts from Momtastic that your kids will love!

#3 – Black Stripe “Trick or Treat” Pumpkins by Midwest Living:
  • Before using your black spray paint, place masking tape over the areas that you want to stay pumpkin-orange.
  • Spray paint your pumpkins black.
  • Remove the tape to reveal your design.
  • Now paint your favorite Halloween saying between the stripes.
  • Want dots?  With a large bit, drill holes in the black painted stripes.
  •  View all 40 Pumpkin Projects by Midwest Living.

#4 – Drill-Bit Polka Dot Pumpkins by Eddie Ross
  • For smaller pumpkins, cut a hole in the bottom to fit a small votive candle, then clean out the insides.
  • Use a 3/8″ drill bit to drill “polka dots” all over.
  • For larger pumpkins, cut off the top and clean out the insides.
  • Use a larger bit to drill larger “polka dots”.
  • Place a votive candle inside (or battery-operated LED candle) for that GLOW we all love!
#5 – Wood Block Painted Pumpkins by Simply Kierste
  • Start with a 4×4 wood post from your home improvement store, ask them to cut into 3 lengths for you:  10″, 7″ and 4″.
  • Paint each block with your base coat (white if you want orange stripes or orange dots).  Let dry.
  • Cover with circle stickers or tape off your stripes and then paint your top color (orange).  Let dry.
  • Remove the stickers or tape and drill a hole in the top to fit your stick “stem”.
  • Very lightly sand all over for her cute, distressed look.  Read her full tutorial.
I hope you make one of these adorable polka dot pumpkins to decorate your home for fall.  They are perfect for fall birthday parties too.  You can’t go wrong with polka dots and the color orange.  I love it!
Happy Fall!  -Sally

It is very rewarding to work with anyone who has good taste and moreover have the freedom to create. Polka Dot Cup Easter Baskets - March 9, 2012 by Admin

How about a really easy and fun Easter craft for the kids?  Perfect for rainy days, playdates, classroom parties or to give to your neighbors – try making these cute Easter “cup baskets”!

You’ll need just a few supplies:

And just a few steps to create an adorable mini Easter cup basket:

  1. Punch two holes in the paper cup, across from each other (this is for your handle).
  2. Thread your pipe cleaner handle through the holes.
  3. Twirl the ends of your pipe cleaner around a pencil so the ends will not slide back through the holes (and it looks cute).
  4. Fill your cup with Easter grass or paper shred.
  5. Top with gumballs or your favorite wrapped Easter candy.
  6. Give to a friend!

You’re all done!  Easy and fun, right?  I think we used to make these in preschool when I was little.  Hope your kids enjoy this Easter craft!

Hosting an Easter party?  This is a great party craft that can double as their party favor.  I love that!

Happy Easter!  -Sally

Ruffles, Pearls and Polka Dots Party - January 6, 2012 by Admin
Today I am so excited that Heidi from Cherry Blossoms is sharing her daughter’s “Pink Ruffles & Pearls” with us!  She picked our hot pink polka dot balloons for the photo shoot above (love the pearls).  Let me show you all of the beautiful touches Heidi created for her daughter Elle’s special first birthday party:

Heidi set up a beautiful display table for the birthday cake, cupcakes, candies and perfectly selected accents to show off her “Pink Ruffles & Pearls” theme.  She made the ruffled paper streamers (tutorial) and the pink letter “E” studded with pearls too!  Fresh Chick Designs created the sweet cupcake topper and candy tag printables.

Of course, the princess needs some strawberry milk to pair with her theme…such a pretty touch with the glass milk bottles and gray stripe paper straws too.  Did I tell you that Heidi made this gorgeous felt birthday hat too?

Birthday cake and tiny smash cake both designed by In Pockets Bakery of Chandler, Arizona.

Thank you so much for sharing your daughter’s special 1st birthday party with us, Heidi!  See lots more beautiful party ideas on her blog every day @ Cherry Blossoms.

Vintage Polka Dot Zoo Party - October 24, 2011 by Admin

My next party feature goes to this darling VINTAGE POLKA DOT ZOO BIRTHDAY PARTY submitted by Anneliese Shapiro of Aesthetic Nest. HOW FUN! I love the little zoo animals. The color scheme of coral, grey, yellow, rickrack, and polka dots is so cute, too. What child doesn’t love the zoo? This would be the perfect party theme for a girl or a boy.

Here is what Anneliese said about the party- “I really appreciate the ability to take my girls and show them a tiger or a penguin or a bear without having to journey and see them in the wild. And I love thinking about zoos a century or so ago–so exotic! Such an outing. I love their park-like settings and wrought iron and imagine the excitement of the visitors when they saw wild animals.
So this birthday party was all about the zoo of yesteryear with happy children and happy, nearly domesticated wild animals. I incorporated polka dots and rick rack to add more of the lighthearted, vintage feel.
We started in our backyard with a lunch. I set some tables with white pleated tablecloths that have convertible inserts in yellow and grey polka dots (pattern coming soon). I love this striped fabric (Premier Prints Lulu Stripe)!  I added another tablecloth for the serving table sewn from Michael Miller Ta-Dot in Stone and trimmed in grey jumbo rickrack.
The girls’ places were set with the vintage zoo Rickrack Place mats and Napkins and these great aluminum camping plates. I love the brushed metal, also on the galvanized French flower pots from IKEA. And who can resist the striped paper straws. I also used them on the birthday cake to make flag poles for the animals.
After lunch, it was off to the zoo! Quite an outing with seven little girls and two adults (thank you, Sue!) but we didn’t even lose one!  And no animals escaped, either.
It was fun to see Audrey and Scarlett running around in their Vintage Zoo Dress and Dirndl Skirt, respectively. And there are always the ideas I didn’t get to trailing after them in my head!”
You can purchase this printable party package in Anneliese’s Etsy shop!

Polka Dot Halloween Party Ideas - September 24, 2011 by Admin

Friday, September 23rd is the first day of fall and I know many of you are planning parties for fall birthdays and Halloween, so let’s share some ideas for incorporating polka dots into your themes!

Above is the Halloween photo shoot set-up for Visive Photography (Jacksonville, FL and High Point, NC photographer) styled by Preppy & Pink using many of our Polka Dot Market products, including our Halloween polka dot balloons.

Let’s start with one of my favorites, mini candy corn treat sacks are ready for your personalized gift tag or sticker:

Something new this year to our shop are the cute polka dot cupcake wrapper sets complete with a black cat topper and a happy pumpkin topper:

I think these happy pumpkin stickers are the perfect addition to your favor backs for classroom parties, fall festivals, neighborhood gifts and more.  Dress up a simple brown paper lunch sack with your child’s name in orange crayon and lots of pumpkin stickers (or let the kids color the bags and add the stickers for a party activity):

You know the popular tissue paper honeycomb globes for decorating parties?  I am smitten with these new tiny pumpkin picks – they are miniature versions of the large honeycomb globes.  Each pumpkin opens for a 3-D cupcake topper or appetizer pick.  How cute is that?

You don’t want to miss our large 12″ diameter paper pumpkin lanterns either!  These will look great with LED lights for Halloween night or hanging on your trunk for your church “Trunk or Treat”.  Reusable year after year – simply fold flat and store with your decorations.  You can even hang each lantern with polka dot ribbon to increase the “cute” factor even more!

Felt Halloween bags are so much fun.  This year’s tote features a chiffon pumpkin applique OR a chenille white ghost applique.  These are less than each for an adorable bag your child will use for years.  I love these bags to dress up a mantle or foyer table – fill with wrapped candies for your fall guests to sneak a sweet before they leave your home!

Looking for a Halloween or fall party favor idea?  Try our polka dot treat boxes paired with coordinating personalized pumpkin stickers!  Boxes are FDA-approved for food contact so fill with your best pumpkin bread or pumpkin muffins and spread the love this fall.

What, no sweets?  No treats?  I’ve got you covered.  Something easy that is right up my alley – Marshmallow Sprinkle Pops!  You can make without chocolate by first brushing or spritzing the marshmallows lightly with water or a glaze of powdered sugar + water.  This will make the sprinkles STICK to your marshmallow pops.  (Or try this easy chocolate-dipped version by Easie Peasie!)

Whatever you do, spend some time “shopping the house” to gather up any items that would work with your fall party or decorating color scheme.  Start with what you have!  Add orange and black polka dot ribbons, flowers, balloons, fabrics and more to items you already have at home.  By gathering items all in one place, you can have a beautiful party set-up just like Stacy of Preppy & Pink created for her Halloween photo shoot shown above (first photo).  No matter what, have fun and save a marshmallow sprinkle pop for me!

Michelle’s Pink Polka Dot ELMO Birthday Party - September 7, 2011 by Admin

Our sweet customer Michelle sent us photos this weekend of her daughter’s fabulous 2nd birthday party.  Her theme was an ELMO girl’s party in pink, orange and red polka dots!

Michelle compiled a detailed list of her finds and I’ll share those at the bottom of the post.  She made a lot of the decorations herself and her friend Stacy Hart Photography of Birmingham, Alabama beautifully photographed the entire event.

Let’s start with the gorgeous pink and orange polka dot ribbon topiary centerpiece above…wow!  Michelle made this using our easy topiary tutorial.  She added the pipe cleaner curly-q’s for a whimsical touch and I just love that!

Michelle picked the Girl’s Elmo Party printable collection from Shindigs and it is a huge set of goodies for !

The infamous HowDoesShe? balloon wreath tutorial came in handy for Michelle – more pink, red and orange balloons and more of my favorite pipe cleaner curly-q’s make this a special and inviting door decoration for her daughter’s 2nd birthday.

Ahh…the food table!  Amazing!  More topiaries, more polka dots, Dorothy’s fish bowls and even our popular cake/cupcake box tower tutorial all decked out with Elmo printables!

What a beautiful day for a party!  I love how she decorated the tent with tissue poms, polka dot balloons, little red chairs and a polka dot table topper.  Looks like a magazine, Michelle!

Thank you for sharing your daughter’s special day with us, and all of your hard work!  Here’s to you and your beautiful family, Michelle!

Michelle’s tips and resources:

This is amazing!  I know so many moms will be so happy to see your ideas and be so inspired by you, Michelle.  Thank you!  – Sally
